Tasmania, the place to bring your trade

Employment
Published 29 June 2016. Last Updated 06 August 2019

Tasmania’s construction industry is a hive of activity, but as with all hives we need the bees to make it thrive.

There are cranes dotting the skyline, works in progress and works in planning – Tasmania’s construction industry is flourishing. And it’s expected to keep growing.

The clear message from industry experts such as Michael Kerschbaum, Executive Director of Master Builders Tasmania, is that if you have a trade then Tasmania is the place for you!

Demand for trades such as plasters and glaziers is already greater than the local industry can supply. But as Mr Kerschbaum notes, these trades are the tip of the iceberg and we’re already seeing interstate work crews being drawn upon to meet demand across the industry. The construction industry is booming, and growth in the industry is expected to not only remain strong, but continue to build momentum.

Demand is not limited to large commercial builds. According to Michael Kerschbaum, “the value of work done in new housing construction is expected to increase by 3.8% to $657 million in 2017-18 and continue to grow for the next few years.”

Rick Sassin, Tasmanian Executive Director of the Housing Industry Australia, also notes “Tasmania is currently experiencing immense residential growth.” As part of its 2018-19 Budget, the Tasmanian Government has extended its $20 000 First Home Owners Grant until 30 June 2019 for the construction of new homes, which is expected to drive further demand in the industry.

As a small jurisdiction with a growing and diverse construction industry, Tasmania is a great place to gain experience and qualifications across the sector.

If you’re thinking about expanding or starting your career in the construction industry, now is a great time to come home or take the plunge and experience the Tasmanian lifestyle for yourself.
